When summer graced you with warmth and fair weather, it was a joy to ride to work and back on two wheels. The journey increased your physical fitness and saved you money on transportation. Now that the colder and less pleasant weather of fall and winter have arrived, you want to continue your pedaling efforts, albeit with more protective clothing on. However, the daylight is fading sooner and you’ll find yourself in the dark often. Take these extra precautions that will help with avoiding bicycle accidents.
- Wear light-colored clothing so you’re more visible to motorists. Add reflectors to your helmet, outerwear, shoes, and bicycle wheels so you they make you brighter when car headlights approach. If you don’t want to mar your outerwear with add-ons, put on a brightly colored and reflective industrial vest over it.
- Attach a headlight light so you can see where you’re going. Mounting it on your bike means the beam always points in the direction of travel and the light can be powered by the motion of your wheels. Mounting it on your helmet requires battery power but lets you direct the beam to where you’re looking.
- Mount a rear light so you’re visible to drivers behind you. More expensive advanced versions feature turn signals that you operate with switches on your handlebar. These indicators show motorists where you intend to go, allowing them to give you leeway.
