If you noticed a delay during your morning commute, it may have had something to do with a safety incident at Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal. At the height of rush hour this morning, a Long Island Rail Road train derailed at the transit hub, injuring at least 76 people.
According to NBC New York, the train plowed into track 6 at Atlantic Terminal at 8:30 this morning. Many commuters complained of neck, back and head injuries, though most were fairly minor and treated at the scene.
A chaotic crash scene
The cause of the accident is still unclear and will likely be investigated extensively by safety officials. In photos of the crash scene, the train appears tipped at an angle and the platform area is filled with smoke. The crash littered the area with debris like broken glass, splintered wood, train seats and fire extinguishers.
The effects were not limited to the terminal itself. As emergency responders poured in, road traffic around the terminal was at a virtual standstill. Other trains passing through the terminal were also slowed down.
Responding to accidents
If you were injured in this accident – or in any other incident involving public transportation – it is essential that you seek immediate medical attention. Even if you feel fine, there may be injuries that only a doctor can detect. Getting the proper medical care also protects your legal rights. Once you’re out of harm’s way, consider speaking with a lawyer who can advise you of your options and help your life return to normal.
