Liability In Central Islip School Bus Accidents
According to the Journalist’s Resource, “on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury. About 50 passengers (including the driver) are killed, on average, in a given year.” There are a number of factors commonly associated with bus accidents including:
- Driver distraction
- Driver fatigue
- Driver intoxication
- Speeding
School buses are considered “common carriers” under the law and are held to a very high standard in terms of safety. Even if a bus driver did not cause an accident they can sometimes make things worse by over-correcting. This is a very common and sometimes deadly mistake. All buses that are capable of carrying 16 or more passengers are required to carry at least $5,000,000 worth of liability coverage.
Any person that is injured in a bus accident may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. It’s important to continue to seek follow up care after an accident. Many accident victims may not even realize the full extent of their injuries until several weeks or months later. A school bus accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
